Day 1 | Floating Markets & the Death Railway
After leaving Bangkok, you reach the famous floating markets. A small rowing boat takes you through the waterways and narrow canals. Just like a hundred years ago, goods are still sold directly from the boats.
In the provincial town of Kanchanaburi, you visit the historic “Death Railway.” An adventurous train ride takes you along the River Kwai and across wooden viaducts. At the Hellfire Pass Memorial Museum, an impressive exhibition shows the conditions under which prisoners of war were forced to work on the railway during World War II.
In the afternoon, a boat takes you to your rustic raft hotel. The floating hotel is surrounded by dense jungle. (L)
Day 2 | The Ancient Royal Capital
After breakfast, you travel through rural landscapes toward the former capital of Siam. Ruins of temples and old palaces still reflect the former glory of the ancient royal city of Ayutthaya and continue to fascinate visitors.
Along the Chao Phraya River lies the highly interesting Wat Phanan Choeng, home to the colossal and deeply revered Buddha image Luang Por To. At Wat Yai, you can see numerous small and large chedis, the tallest rising more than 60 meters. The temple was commissioned in 1357 by King U-Thong, the first king of the Ayutthaya Kingdom, and served as accommodation for monks returning from Ceylon, where they studied Buddhist teachings. (L)
Day 3 | The Monkey Capital & Rice Barge Cruise
In the morning, you travel to Lopburi. The city’s most famous attraction is its huge population of macaques. Hundreds of monkeys roam freely through the streets and buildings.
After a walk through the town, the journey continues through the central Thai plains past rice fields and small villages until you reach the rural province of Uthai Thani.
After visiting an authentic farmer’s market with an enormous variety of fresh vegetables and exotic fruits, you board a converted rice barge. For over an hour, the teak barge glides gently along the undeveloped Sakae Krang River, passing floating wooden homes often surrounded by aquatic greens. It offers a deeper impression of the simple river-based life of the local people. (L)
Day 4 | Jurassic Park & Biking
You travel along small rural roads to Pa Tad Valley. This natural paradise features dense forests and limestone mountains. A path leads to a rock tunnel, and after passing through, you feel transported into another world. This feeling is intensified by a “Jurassic Park”-like canyon with seemingly prehistoric plants and a mystical atmosphere.
The journey continues north toward the historical park of Old Sukhothai, an important site in Thai history. In the late 13th century, Sukhothai became the first capital and a stronghold of Thai language and culture. It played a significant role in the development of art, religion, daily life, and political and economic power.
Within the old city walls, now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, lie the ruins of ancient temples. The venerable site is explored by bicycle—a wonderful opportunity to relax and enjoy the surrounding silence. (L)
Day 5 | Lake Scenery & Laid-Back Chiang Rai
Your journey continues through the mountains until you reach the small provincial town of Phayao. Here lies northern Thailand’s largest freshwater lake, covered with water hyacinths and rich in fish and freshwater crabs. Many small local eateries around the lake invite you to dine and unwind, offering a typical sense of provincial charm.
The day ends in Chiang Rai. Life here is truly laid-back, and visitors will immediately feel the friendliness and welcoming nature of the people. The streets are full of local food stalls offering unique northern Thai dishes. (L)
Day 6 | The Legendary Golden Triangle
Travel through the former northern royal city of Chiang Saen to the Golden Triangle, where Thailand, Myanmar, and Laos meet at the Mekong River. An adventurous boat trip takes you along the river to the border areas of all three countries.
Mae Sai, Thailand’s northernmost town, thrives on lively trade between Thais, Burmese, and local hill tribes. When possible, you may cross the border and explore the Burmese town on foot.
On the return to Chiang Rai, you stop at Wat Rong Suea Ten. One of the temple’s most striking features is its exterior, painted entirely in vibrant shades of blue. The color symbolizes the Buddha’s radiant purity and peace and creates a stunning visual contrast to the surrounding landscape. (L)
Day 7 | White Temple & Hot Springs
Your first stop today is Wat Rong Khun, widely known as the “White Temple.” Unlike Thailand’s traditionally colorful temples, its white design symbolizes the purity of the Buddha. The bridge in front of the main temple represents the transition into Nirvana.
The panoramic drive continues through the forested, sparsely populated mountain region of northern Thailand, home to various hill tribes with their own cultures and languages. Along the way, you stop at the San Kamphaeng hot springs, where you can enjoy a relaxing footbath. Two decorated geysers shoot hot mineral water high into the air—original temperatures exceeding 100°C. You can even boil eggs in the water and enjoy them with soy sauce.
After arriving in Chiang Mai, the largest city in northern Thailand, you have time to explore on foot. In the evening, visit the lively Night Bazaar and enjoy the atmosphere and live music along the Ping River. (L)
Day 8 | Mountain Monastery on Doi Suthep
In the morning, you travel through Chiang Mai, founded in 1296 by King Mengrai and later the capital of the Lanna Kingdom. A winding road leads up the more than 1,000-meter-high Doi Suthep. For Buddhists, this sacred mountain is home to Wat Phra That Doi Suthep, a historic monastery and the city’s iconic landmark. The mountain is also popular with hikers and nature lovers thanks to its sweeping views, lush forests, and rich wildlife.
Expert Tip: To experience local life up close, visit one of the city’s many markets in the afternoon. You will find fresh produce, flowers, and a wide variety of authentic Thai street food. Alternatively, your guide can take you to additional culturally significant temples. (L)
Day 9 | End of the Journey or Island Extension
With many unforgettable impressions, you are transferred to Chiang Mai Airport for your flight back to Bangkok. A return by train is also possible (train ticket not included).
We are happy to design an extension program—such as a relaxing island stay in southern Thailand.
