Hidden Treasures in Thailand’s Island World

Island hopping is one of the most beloved activities for travelers in Southeast Asia, and Thailand offers some of the region’s most breathtaking and diverse islands. The trio of Ko Chang, Ko Mak, and Ko Kood in the Gulf of Thailand is a true gem and deserves a place on any well-planned itinerary. These islands are perfect for beach lovers, nature enthusiasts, and anyone seeking peace and relaxation in a tropical setting.

Ko Chang, your first stop, is one of the largest and most developed islands of the trio. It offers a harmonious blend of natural beauty and modern comforts.

Your next island, Ko Mak – the smaller sister of Ko Chang – promises a more tranquil and secluded atmosphere. Known for its calm beaches and untouched nature, it is an ideal retreat for those seeking serenity and solitude.

Finally, Ko Kood, often described as “paradise on earth,” provides the perfect ending to your island-hopping adventure. This island is famous for its pristine beaches and crystal-clear waters and offers a remote and unspoiled experience. As the least developed of the three, it is a haven for travelers who value solitude and immersion in nature.

Best Time to Visit

The cool season in the northern Gulf of Thailand, from November to February, brings pleasant weather with temperatures between 77°F and 86°F (25–30°C).

The hot season, typically from March to June, is characterized by higher temperatures and humidity. During these months, the islands offer clear blue skies and minimal rainfall, making it an ideal period for sunseekers and beach enthusiasts.

Following the hot season, the region transitions into the rainy season from July to October. Expect heavy showers and the occasional thunderstorm. While some travelers may shy away from this season, it has its own charm: the rain refreshes the lush greenery and turns the islands into vibrant tropical landscapes.

Day 1–4 | Ko Chang

Upon arrival at Trat Airport, you will be greeted and transferred to the pier for your ferry to Ko Chang, followed by a transfer to your resort. The days on the island are yours to enjoy at your leisure.

Nestled in the Gulf of Thailand and close to the Cambodian border, Ko Chang is a true tropical paradise. With stunning beaches, lush rainforests, and vibrant marine life, it’s no wonder this island has become a beloved destination for travelers seeking a break from everyday life.

As part of the Mu Ko Chang National Park, alongside roughly 50 neighboring islands, Ko Chang is renowned for its beautiful beaches—from secluded white-sand stretches to livelier beachfronts with hotels and a touch of nightlife. The island offers endless possibilities.

Beyond its beaches, Ko Chang is covered by dense rainforest, which spans more than 70% of its land area. This makes it an outstanding destination for nature lovers. With its diverse ecosystem, the island is home to exotic birds, monkeys, and even elephants. Jungle trekking is a popular activity, allowing visitors to discover hidden waterfalls and explore the island’s rich flora and fauna.

Day 4–6 | Ko Mak

After breakfast, you will be picked up at your hotel and taken to the pier for your ferry to Ko Mak. Upon arrival, you will be welcomed and transferred to your resort. The following days are free for you to enjoy.

Ko Mak is a hidden treasure in the Gulf of Thailand, known for its unspoiled beauty and peaceful atmosphere. As one of Thailand’s lesser-known islands, it is an ideal escape for travelers seeking a quiet and idyllic retreat. Palm-lined shores and soft white sands give the island a distinct “island-life” feeling.

With just 6 square miles (16 km²), Ko Mak is the third-largest island in the Trat archipelago. Despite its size, the island offers a variety of activities for every interest. Spend your days relaxing on the beaches, swimming in calm waters, or exploring the island by bicycle.

Ko Mak is also a wonderful place to experience local culture. Visit the picturesque fishing village, observe traditional island life, and try regional specialties. Excursions to the nearby small islands by traditional longtail boat are also very popular.

Day 6–8 | Ko Kood

You will be picked up from your resort and taken to the pier. A speedboat brings you further south to the island of Ko Kood. Upon arrival, you will be welcomed and transferred to your hotel. The coming days are free for relaxation and exploration at your own pace.

Ko Kood is a paradise island offering a variety of sightseeing opportunities. With its pristine beaches, lush rainforest, and enchanting waterfalls, it attracts both nature lovers and beach enthusiasts. Exploring Ko Kood feels like stepping into a postcard-perfect tropical world, almost surreal in its beauty.

Stretching nearly 14 miles (23 km) in length, Ko Kood is Thailand’s fourth-largest island and can be reached in about one hour by speedboat from the mainland. Its roughly 2,000 residents still live much as previous generations did—mainly from fishing, with coconut and rubber cultivation as additional sources of income alongside tourism.

After breakfast at your resort, you will be transferred to the pier for your speedboat back to the mainland and onward travel to Trat Airport.
