Forgotten Jungle Temples of Cambodia & Encounters in the Countryside
Cambodia, a land shaped by ancient splendour and a vibrant living culture, invites you on a journey through time and tradition. Travelling to Angkor, Tonle Sap, Battambang and Phnom Penh offers an enriching experience that connects you with history, nature and the spirit of the Cambodian people.
The adventure begins in Angkor, the crown jewel of Cambodia’s cultural heritage. Hidden within dense jungle lie numerous historic temple ruins, each telling stories of past kingdoms. On the freshwater lake Tonle Sap, you board a traditional wooden boat and gain insight into the life of the stilt-house communities. Further inland, Battambang welcomes you with rustic charm and a relaxed atmosphere – an authentic glimpse of Cambodian life far from the typical tourist paths. The final stage of your journey leads to Phnom Penh, the lively capital of the country.
The Best Time to Visit
Cambodia’s rainy season lasts from around May to September. Siem Reap, Phnom Penh and Battambang can be visited throughout the year. During the rainy season, we do not recommend the northeastern regions due to difficult road conditions, nor the seaside resorts because of the quickly changing weather.
The best travel period is from November to March.

Day 2 | Exploring the Enchanting Temple World of Angkor
Today you dive into the mystical temple world of Angkor, the former capital of the Khmer Empire, which flourished from the 9th to the 15th century.
In this vast archaeological park, you visit Angkor Thom, the “Great City”, surrounded by an impressive moat and monumental walls. You enter through the majestic South Gate, lined with stone figures of gods and demons – a moment that feels like stepping back in time. At its heart lies the iconic Bayon Temple, famous for its mysterious stone faces.
Ta Prohm, a UNESCO World Heritage site, remained hidden in the jungle for 400 years. Here, nature has reclaimed the ancient stones: massive tree roots wrap around walls and gateways, creating a breathtaking and atmospheric sight.
In the afternoon, you visit the highlight – Angkor Wat. One of the greatest architectural masterpieces of the ancient world, Angkor Wat is a UNESCO World Heritage site and a proud national symbol of Cambodia. Late in the afternoon, you have the chance to watch the sunset from Phnom Bakheng Hill.

Day 3 | Everyday Life in Rural Cambodia
Together with your guide, you travel to the floating villages on Tonle Sap Lake, which offer fascinating insights into centuries-old ways of living. Located on Southeast Asia’s largest freshwater lake, these communities adjust to seasonal water levels by living in stilt houses. A boat ride takes you past villages inhabited by diverse communities who rely mainly on fishing.
Afterwards, you experience an ox-cart ride along narrow village paths. For centuries, ox carts served farmers for transport and field work, and were even used as military vehicles during past wars. Temple carvings throughout Cambodia show how deeply rooted they are in the country’s history.
Your journey continues through lush landscapes into Battambang Province.
Here, a special adventure awaits: a ride on the famous “Bamboo Train”, an improvised rail platform made of bamboo, set on two axles and powered by a small motor. It glides gently through the countryside – simple, slow and unforgettable.
Shortly before sunset, you witness an impressive natural spectacle outside the city: hundreds of thousands of bats emerging from a cave and soaring into the surrounding jungle. The colony is so large that it can take up to 20 minutes until all bats have left the cave.

Day 4 | From the Countryside to the Capital
After a relaxing night in Battambang, Cambodia’s second-largest city, you visit Ek Phnom, an 11th-century temple ruin set in peaceful surroundings. The large, white sitting Buddha statue next to the temple is an impressive sight. You also visit the Banan Temple, which offers a spectacular panoramic view over the plains.
Approaching the capital, Phnom Penh unfolds as a fascinating blend of tradition and modernity. Its lively streets are lined with colonial-era buildings, modern skyscrapers and vibrant markets – a dynamic cityscape that reflects Cambodia’s rapid transformation.
Tip: Enjoy an evening walk along the scenic riverfront at the Tonle Sap. From here you have beautiful views of the city skyline, wooden boats and the lively activity of street vendors. As you stroll, you pass the Royal Palace and a variety of cafés and restaurants.

Day 5 | Historic Highlights – A Journey into the Past
A day full of impressions awaits you. At the Royal Palace, you experience the elegance of Cambodia’s monarchy. The palace is the official residence of the King of Cambodia.
The National Museum presents a rich collection of Khmer art and cultural heritage. Afterwards, a traditional cyclo ride takes you through the colonial districts of the city.
To understand one of the darkest chapters in Cambodia’s history, you visit the Toul Sleng Museum, a former high school that was turned into a prison and interrogation centre under the Khmer Rouge in the 1970s.
Outside the city lies Choeung Ek, the most well-known of Cambodia’s “Killing Fields”, which offers a sobering look at the suffering endured during this period.
