Temples & Treasures: Adventures in Siem Reap
A journey to the ancient city of Angkor is a passage through time and culture. Nowhere else in Southeast Asia opens such a vivid window into a bygone but captivating world – the once-mighty Khmer Empire. Located in the heart of Cambodia, the temple complex of Angkor is the largest religious monument in the world and a UNESCO World Heritage Site that attracts travelers from all over the globe.
Built in the 12th century under King Suryavarman II, the vast complex is a masterpiece of architecture and craftsmanship. Angkor Wat is the centerpiece of this archaeological park and is surrounded by equally remarkable temples such as the enigmatic Bayon and the jungle-covered Ta Prohm.
Best Time to Visit
Cambodia’s rainy season begins around May and ends in September. Despite the tropical climate, Siem Reap, Phnom Penh, and Battambang are welcoming year-round.
During the rainy season, however, the roads in the northeast can be challenging, and coastal areas tend to experience rapidly changing weather.
The ideal travel period is November to March, when temperatures are pleasant and rainfall is minimal.

Day 2 | A Journey Through the Enchanting Temple World of Angkor
Today you step into the mystical world of Angkor – the former capital of the Khmer Empire, which flourished from the 9th to the 15th century.
Your day begins in Angkor Thom, the “Great City,” surrounded by a vast moat and impressive walls. You enter through the majestic South Gate, guarded by rows of stone figures depicting gods and demons. From the very first moment, the atmosphere feels like a step back in time. At its heart stands the Bayon Temple, famous for its serene stone faces that watch over the ancient city.
You continue to Ta Prohm, a UNESCO World Heritage Site left untouched for centuries. Here, nature has reclaimed the temple with dramatic root systems and tangled branches – a scene that remains one of Cambodia’s most iconic images.
In the afternoon awaits the highlight: Angkor Wat. Considered one of the greatest architectural achievements of the ancient world, Angkor Wat is a national symbol of Cambodia and a testament to the brilliance of past civilizations.
Near sunset, you ascend Phnom Bakheng, the perfect vantage point to watch the sun set over the temple landscape.

Day 3 | Everyday Life & Floating Village
Together with your guide, you leave the city behind and drive into the countryside to Banteay Srei. Built in the 10th century and crafted from distinctive red sandstone, this temple is celebrated for its delicate carvings and its poetic nickname, “Citadel of Women.”
Next you explore Banteay Samré, a beautifully restored temple built in the architectural style of Angkor Wat.
Your journey continues to the floating villages of Tonle Sap, which offer fascinating insights into centuries-old traditions. Located on the largest freshwater lake in Southeast Asia, these communities adapt to seasonal water levels by building their homes on stilts. During your boat trip, you pass settlements where daily life revolves around fishing and the rhythm of the lake.
Your excursion concludes with a ride on a traditional ox cart through narrow village paths. Historically used for farming and transportation – and even by armies to move supplies – ox carts are deeply rooted in Cambodian culture. Many temples feature ancient carvings that show how long this tradition has existed.
